Healthy eating, active living – Be Aware of Trans Fats

Caribbean Nutrition Day, Sunday June 1, 2008

 

Specific objectives

  1. Promote healthy eating
  2. Promote increased physical activity
  3. Share information on the roles and effects of the different types of fats in the diet
  4. Increase the public’s awareness and knowledge on about Trans Fats
  5. Promote use of the nutrition label reading as a means of controlling fat intake and identifying foods with Trans Fat.
  6. Increase understanding of nutrition labels

 

Target groups:

  1. Students
  2. Clinic attendees especially those at the chronic disease clinics
  3. Churches

 

Country plans:

  1. Grenada -Emphasis on: physical activity and greater fruit consumption
  2. Jamaica - Health Festival in the Western Region
  3. Dominica
    1. Radio address by the Minister of Health and Enviroment: Hon. John Fabien

    2. Radio and television Interviews.
    3. Messages to churches
    4. Walk-a- thons (organized at district level)
  4. Antigua
    1. Saturday and Sunday May 31st and June 1 worship service and information in the notices/bulletin
    2. Monday, June 2, programmes in schools
    3. Wednseday, June 4 – Walk and education session at a worksiote
    4. Friday, June 6 – Booths at two supermarkets providing education/information on reading food labels and exercise on reducing fat in the diet
  5. Celebration of Caribbean Nutrition Day 2008
