Honey

Honey is a natural syrup produced by bees. Its composition and flavour varies depending on the plant source of the nectar, processing and storage. It is described as man's oldest sweetener and has a similar chemical composition as sucrose.

Since ancient times, honey has been regarded as a food that promotes good health. It appears in so many traditional remedies. Some of its properties are as follows:

  • It is a mild antiseptic such as in the treatment of burns;
  • It contains polyphenols which are known as powerful antioxidants that are thought to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer;
  • It is used in the treatment of seasonal allergies;
  • It is easily digested and rapidly diffuses through the blood;
  • It supports blood formation; and
  • It contributes some minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium chlorine, sulphur, iron and phosphate.

Some of the main uses of honey are in cooking, baking, spreading on bread or toast, and as an addition to various beverages such as tea. Raw honey that has not been pasteurized, clarified or filtered is the best choice. It is important to keep honey stored in an airtight container so that it does not absorb moisture from the air. Honey stored this way in a cool dry place will keep almost indefinitely.
